It has been long rumored but now is it looking like Warner Brothers are fast-tracking their female-driven spinoff Ocean’s Eight as seven of the titular leads have signed to star in the heist film.
Based on the remake of Ocean’s Eleven, which starred George Clooney as Danny Ocean, a master thief who assembled a team to perform some major heists, the new team will be led by Sandra Bullock, who will play Danny Ocean’s ex-con sister, who assembles her own team to steal a steal a necklace from the Met Ball to take down duplicitous gallery owner.
Joining Bullock will be Cate Blanchett as her right-hand henchwoman; Anne Hathaway; pop star Rihanna; Helena Bonham Carter; Mindy Kaling; and Nora Lum. For those unfamiliar with Lum, she is also known as Awkwafina, an Asian-American rapper who recently made her film debut in the hit comedy sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. The last female team member has still yet to be cast. At one point Elizabeth Banks was rumored to be joining the cast, but no confirmation as of yet.
Gary Ross is directing the film from a script he had written with Olivia Milch. Steven Soderbergh, who directed Ocean’s Eleven and its sequel, Ocean’s Twelve, will come in as a producer. Schedules pending, there may be cameos from cast members of the original two films.
Filming begins in October with a 2017/2018 release date from Warner Brothers.
