Yukito Kishiro‘s 1990 classic manga Battle Angel Alita will be getting the live-action treatment courtesy of 20th Century Fox.
The major news revolving around this is that it will be a collaboration between James Cameron, who will be producing and is being set to direct the film, but due to perhaps commitments to the upcoming Avatar sequels has withdrawn from directing; and Spy Kids franchise director Robert Rodriguez.
The story revolves around Alita, a cyborg left in a dumpster with no memories as she is taken in by a cybernetics doctor. As he revives her, she begins to remember a style of fighting she excelled in called “Panzer Kunst”, which allows her to become a bounty hunter. As she hunts down criminals, she also decides to rediscover her past.
As for the role of Alita, four actresses are in contention for the role. They include:
- Maika Monroe of Independence Day: Resurgence
- Bella Thorne of The DUFF
- Rosa Salazar of The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials
- Zendaya Coleman of Spider-Man: Homecoming
Due to commitments with Spider-Man, Coleman may be dropped from contention as Battle Angel Alita is set to begin to production sometime at the end of the year.
