Fans of the hit manga and anime series Full Metal Alchemist get ready! A live-action version is revving up for 2017.

Hiromu Arakawa‘s tale of two brothers searching for a philosopher’s stone to restore their bodies after a failed attempt to bring their mother back to life using alchemy, is currently in development with Fumihiko Sori (Ping Pong) tapped to direct. Assassination Classroom‘s Ryosuke Yamada has been cast as lead character Edward Elric.

The plan is go the VFX route to show some of the fantastic elements of the story. Sori had gone digital before for his adaptation of the manga Ping Pong in 2001.

Shooting is scheduled to begin in June in Italy and run through August. Full Metal Alchemist is being sought for a 2017 release date in Japan.
