With busy schedules, there are the occasional news that I may miss so this post consists of interesting news during the week in the world of cinema. So let’s begin!

  • Jet Li (above left) has been cast as the villain of XxX: The Return of Xander Cage, which brings back Vin Diesel (above right) in the role he originated. The first sequel, State of the Union, had Ice Cube playing a new character taking lead. It was also announced that Thai action star Tony Jaa has joined the cast alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Nina Dobrev, Deepika Padukone, and Ruby Rose. Shooting is currently underway. (Image from The Hollywood Reporter)
  • Benedict Wong, best known for playing Kublai Khan in Netflix’s Marco Polo series, has been cast as Wong, the servant of the “Supreme Sorcerer” himself in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, currently shooting. Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, and Mads Mikkelsen co-star. The film is scheduled for a November release.
  • McG is in talks to direct the long-developing reboot of Masters of the Universe. Unlike the original 1987 film that starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor, the plan is to adapt the 1983 cartoon series, which means we would see Prince Adam and Cringer, who become both He-Man and Battlecat respectively. Last time news was announced, Jon M. Chu was slated to direct but it didn’t work out.
  • It has been revealed this weekend that Walking Dead actress Lauren Cohan had been cast in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. She appears in the pivotal flashback sequence as Martha Wayne, the mother of Batman, played by Ben Affleck. Jeffrey Dean Morgan appears in the sequence as Thomas Wayne.
  • In news that will shock anyone who is a beloved David Bowie and Jim Henson fan, TriStar Pictures and the Jim Henson Company have agreed to remake the beloved 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. In the original film, Bowie played Jareth the Goblin King, who kidnaps a young toddler only to have his sister, played by Jennifer Connelly, try to rescue him. Lisa Hensonis set to produce with the script being done by Nicole Perlman, who co-wrote the Marvel hit film Guardians of the Galaxy. Only one question can sum this up: Why?
UPDATE: Breath a sigh of relief folks! Perlman took to Twitter this weekend to deny writing the reboot!!!

And that’s just a small recap of news this week in the world of cinema!
