Next year, the world will once again be fighting for its independence against the alien regime in the sequel Independence Day: Resurgence. The first trailer to the film, directed by the original film’s helmer Roland Emmerich, has appeared.

Original ID4 stars Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brett Spiner, and Bill Pullman return with new cast members Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Angelababy, and Jessie Usher as Dylan, the son of Fox’s character Jasmine and stepson of Will Smith’s heroic Steven Hiller in the original film.

Smith did not return to the film for two reasons: he didn’t want to do any more sequels and he was working on Suicide Squad at the time. However, an official site about the “War of 1996” explains Hiller’s fate:

“April 27, 2007…While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller’s valor in the War of ’96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy’s defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.”

Independence Day: Resurgence is scheduled for release on June 23, 2016.
